Our Doctrinal Foundations

The Berean Standard begins where the Bereans began—with the text itself. Scripture is the authority. The creeds don’t govern our analysis. They witness to what Scripture has always said.

Every point in The Berean Standard is grounded first in Scripture, then confirmed by the historic creeds and confessions that have faithfully summarized biblical teaching across two millennia. The creeds function as witnesses to what the Bible teaches—not as independent authorities. This hierarchy is non-negotiable: if a creed or confession contradicts Scripture, Scripture prevails.

This is the Acts 17:11 model. The Bereans did not test Paul’s teaching against the councils—they went to Scripture directly. Our tool carries their name because it carries their method.

Scripture as Authority

God’s Word is the final standard for faith and practice. Every doctrinal point begins here. Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia.

Creeds as Witnesses

Nicene Creed (325/381 AD), Apostles’ Creed, Chalcedonian Definition—faithful summaries that confirm what Scripture teaches, not replace it.

Evangelical Consensus

Aligned with the Lausanne Covenant and National Association of Evangelicals statement of faith—rooted in the authority of the biblical text.

What we’re NOT: We don’t adjudicate secondary issues where faithful Christians disagree (baptism mode, end-times views, charismatic gifts, church governance). The Berean Standard focuses on primary doctrines—the non-negotiables that Scripture itself makes clear.

Three-Tier Severity System

Every finding is classified by theological significance to help you prioritize your discernment.

Tier 1: CAUTION

Authority and source issues. Be aware of where this teaching originates and whether Scripture supports it.

Tier 2: CONCERN

Interpretive and methodological issues. Proceed with discernment - the approach may lead to problematic conclusions.

Tier 3: WARNING

Doctrinal errors touching core Christian beliefs. Seek pastoral counsel before accepting these teachings.

Doctrinal Foundations 15 points

#1 - Scripture Authority

Sample

Scripture is the final authority for faith and practice. We detect when cultural consensus, scholarly opinion, or human tradition is elevated above God's Word.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 - "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness"

#2 - Christ's Exclusivity

Sample

Jesus is the only way to salvation. We identify universalist tendencies, interfaith syncretism, and teachings that suggest multiple paths to God.

John 14:6; Acts 4:12 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

#3 - Trinitarian Doctrine

Sample

God exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Christ is fully God and fully man. We flag modalism, Arianism, and denials of Christ's deity or humanity.
